When the thyroid gland does not create enough thyroid hormones, the condition is known as hypothyroidism. Many of the body's activities slow down when thyroxine levels are low. The thyroid gland, which is located in the front of the neck below the larynx, or voice box, has two lobes, one on each side of the windpipe. It is an endocrine gland composed of unique cells that produce hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers that carry information to and from the body's organs and tissues, affecting activities such as metabolism, growth, and mood.
